CHESS CLUBS IN THE GREATER CAPITAL DISTRICT (2008)
SCHENECTADY CHESS CLUB

The Schenectady Chess Club is this area's oldest chess organization, tracing its
roots back nearly a century. Players of all ages and strengths are welcome. We meet
Thursday nights at 7:30PM.
Club membership is $36/year. The annual organizational meeting is 9/21/06. The
Club Championship is a round robin (G/90) one-game-per-week tournament that starts
on 10/5/2006. Club members play for free. Club members play free in the Amateur Team
tourney in February and in the Capital District Chess League tournament in the spring.
Directions: The club is easily reachable from the North, via Balltown
Road/Route 146 or from the south via Van Vranken Avenue. The Community Center is a
little over a mile from where Balltown meets Aqueduct, and about the same distance
from the Schenectady City Limits, where Aqueduct turns into Van Vranken Avenue.

KINGS KNIGHT CHESS CLUB

We are a small group of chessplayers who gather on Wednesday evenings from 7:00
to 10:00 at the Rosendale Cafe (Main Street) south of Kingston. There are all
levels, mostly adults, but a few kids from time to time. Lots of casual chess,
no formal tournaments at this time. In the summer we organize a chess program
for kids at the Kingston Library and meet Tuesday and Wednesday mornings in July
and August.
MARGARETVILLE CHESS CLUB
The Margaretville Chess Club has been inactive of late, but we hope to resume meetings in summer of 2008, subject to sufficient player interest. Margaretville is located about 42 miles West of Kingston on NYS Rte. 28. For more info, contact Tom Delehanty, tdelehanty@catskill.net , 845-586-2054.
NORTH OF ALBANY
SARATOGA STAUNTON CHESS CLUB

Meetings: Every Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the Saratoga Springs United Methodist Church, 175 Fifth Avenue in Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. The club's annual meeting will be on 9/7/08. The club championship is an annual round robin (G/105), one-game-per-week tournament that starts 9/21/08.
Other Activities: In the spring, the club schedules team matches with other local clubs in the Capital District Chess League. Play in the League tournament is free to club members. During the spring and summer, lectures are conducted by one of the area's better players on a specific opening variation. Then a three-round "thematic" tournament is held 1-2 weeks later, where each game starts with the same opening line.
Visitors & New Members: Visitors are always welcome and casual games are usually possible, even during club events. The spring and summer thematic lectures and tournaments are open to members and non-members alike. To become a member, annual dues are just $8.
Directions: From Exit 14 of the Northway (I-87), turn north towards Saratoga, onto Union Ave. At light, turn right onto Henning Rd. Go to Fifth Ave. and the United Methodist Church is on your left.
GREENWICH CHESS CLUB

We meet Thursday nights in the Community Room of the Greenwich Free Library. Meetings begin at 6:30 PM. Players of all ages and strengths are invited to attend. Remember that the best way to improve is by playing! So come in for a casual game, or a free lesson, or to hear about what is happening in the chess world from the local level to the international level.
From the Northway (I 87), take Exit 14 off the Northway. Follow signs for Rte. 29 East thru Schuylerville into Greenwich. The library is on the right side of the road at the intersection with Academy St. There is parking behind the building and in the Banknorth Bank lot right next door. (About 30 minutes east of Saratoga.)
